Target amount of €4.7 million in funds raised for cancer research achieved at Elfsteden triathlon!
From 18 to 25 June, former Olympic champion Maarten van der Weijden completed his Elfsteden triathlon past eleven cities in the Netherlands’ Friesland province. He swam 200 kilometres, cycled 200 kilometres and walked 200 kilometres and was helped by many fellow athletes. The aim of this achievement was to raise as much money as possible, which will all go to cancer research. The target amount of €4.7 million was achieved, partly because the Reggeborgh Foundation doubled all donations, and this will allow all 11 selected cancer research projects to be carried out.

Eleven cities, eleven research projects
‘I’m intensely grateful and happy. Making the 11 research projects possible has always been the main reason why I wanted to do the Elfsteden triathlon. It worked!’ said Maarten van der Weijden.
Beforehand, the medical advisory board of the Maarten van der Weijden Foundation selected 11 research projects. During the Elfsteden triathlon, one research project was featured during the passage through each of the eleven cities. Now that the target amount has been reached, the cancer research can begin. These research projects focus on preventing cancer, increasing the chance of recovery, prolonging life, increasing quality of life and/or improving palliative care, among other things.
Reggeborgh doubles donations
‘We are immensely proud of Maarten's achievement. He gave his all, raising a wonderful amount of money. Thanks in part to his efforts and the commitment of all his fellow athletes, even more cancer research can now be done. Research as part of the 11 selected projects is very important and with the doubling of donations, all the research projects can be carried out,’ said Inge Wessels of the Reggeborgh Foundation.
