Festive opening of Rijssen on Ice with Femke Kok and Mats Siemons
On the afternoon of Wednesday 11 December, the Rijssen op ’t IJs (Rijssen on Ice) ice rink was festively opened to loud applause from an enthusiastic crowd. Our speed skaters Femke Kok and Mats Siemons had the honour of giving the starting signal together with the athletes of Only Friends Twente. After a short fireworks display, they skated the first laps on the track together with frame skaters and talents from the Rijssen Ice and Inline Skating Club.
Neighbourly support in Rijssen
The opening of the Rijssen on Ice ice rink marks a tradition of noaberschap, which is a term in the local dialect that loosely translates as ‘neighbourly support’, and cooperation. ‘This event shows what we can achieve together,’ says Hendri Markvoort on behalf of the organisers. ‘The atmosphere is great and the track brings everyone together, from families to athletes.’
Winter fun for all
The 300-square-metre ice rink will host an extensive range of events. One of the highlights is the curling competition for companies. The ice rink is open daily from 9am to 9pm, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the winter ambience at any time. With a varied programme, hot chocolate and plenty of skating fun, Rijssen on Ice promises to be the shining centre of winter. The track will remain open until 4 January 2025.
